Technical Staff

Travis Oliphant, Ph.D.Travis has a Ph.D. from the Mayo Clinic and B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mathematics and Electrical Engineering from Brigham Young University. Since 1997, he has worked extensively with Python for numerical and scientific programming, most notably as the primary developer of the NumPy package, and as a founding contributor of the SciPy package. He is also the author of the definitive "Guide to NumPy".

Travis was an assistant professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at BYU from 2001-2007, where he taught courses in probability theory, electromagnetics, inverse problems, and signal processing. He also served as Director of the Biomedical Imaging Lab, where he researched satellite remote sensing, MRI, ultrasound, elastography, and scanning impedance imaging.

From 2007-2011, Travis was the President at Enthought, Inc. During his tenure there, the company grew from 15 to 50 employees, and Travis worked with well-known Fortune 50 companies in finance, oil-and-gas, and consumer-products. He was involved in all aspects of the contractual relationship, including consulting, training, code-architecture, and development.

As CEO of Continuum Analytics, Travis engages customers, develops business strategy, and guides technical direction of the company. He actively contributes to software development and engages with the wider open source community in the Python ecosystem.


Peter WangPeter holds a B.A. in Physics from Cornell University and has been developing applications professionally using Python since 2001. Before co-founding Continuum Analytics in 2011, Peter spent seven years at Enthought designing and developing applications for a variety of companies, including investment bankers, high-frequency trading firms, oil companies, and others. In 2007, Peter was named Director of Technical Architecture and served as client liaison on high-profile projects. Peter also developed Chaco, an open-source, Python-based toolkit for interactive data visualization.

Peter's roles at Continuum Analytics include product design and development, software management, business strategy, and training.


Francesc AltedMr. Alted has a B.S. in Physics from the University of Valencia, Spain and three M.S. degrees, Electronics and Computer Science, Theoretical Physics, and Mathematical Methods, from the University of Valencia and the University Jaume I. Francesc is also the author of the popular PyTables package which is a nascent database for NumPy.

Mark WeibeMr. Wiebe has a B. Sc. (with Honors) in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Manitoba, and is working on an M. Sc. at the University of British Columbia. Mark comes from the visual effects industry and has led the R&D department at Frantic Films behind products like Krakatoa, Frost, and Deadline. Combined with his background in Computer Science and Mathematics, this has given Mark a strong theoretical understanding of the problems being tackled by Continuum and a battle-hardened ability to create complex software on tight deadlines.

Hugo Shi, Ph.D.Dr. Shi has a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan studying statistical medical image reconstruction and a BS from UC Berkeley. Prior to joining Continuum, Hugo worked as a consultant at an investment bank where he optimized parallel computing and data distribution problems and consulted on quantitative investment strategies for a machine learning and big data focused hedge fund. Hugo has also developed quantitative strategies and real-time risk management tools for the Chicago Trading Company, an options market-making firm. Before leaving the west coast, Hugo worked on embedded systems for ad-hoc multi-hop wireless sensor networks.

Paddy MullenPaddy Mullen earned a B.S. in Economics from George Mason University. After graduating he started programming, working at a variety of startups. Paddy has also worked on side projects such as terminal cast and chart widget, two advanced javascript programs. At perpetually.com he wrote a flash decompiler and javascript rewriting system.

Joel HullMr. Hull received a BBA from the University of Texas with a major in Management Information Systems. Mr. Hull has over 20 years of experience in software design, architecture, and development. Mr. Hull has worked in several industries in his career including warehouse management, semi-conductor factory automation, telecom services, and software consulting. Most recently, Mr. Hull worked for frog design as a Software Architect and Associate Technology Director where he provided consulting expertise to clients on various mobile and web based solutions. Mr. Hull also has architecture and deployment experience with large-scale cloud-based systems for video hosting (Invodo), mobile data synchronization (Intellisync, Nokia, Verizon Wireless), and high availability factory automation (Motorola). Mr. Hull is also proficient in iPhone app development.


Bryan Ven De VenMr. Van de Ven received undergraduate degrees in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master's degree in physics from UCLA. He has worked at the Applied Research Labs developing software for sonar feature detection and classification systems on US Naval submarine platforms. He also spent time at Enthought, where he worked on problems in financial risk modeling and fluid mixing simulation, and also contributed to the Chaco visualization library. He has also worked on an assortment of iOS projects as an independent consultant.

Ilan Schnell, Ph.D.Dr. Ilan Schnell has a Ph.D. in theoretical solid state physics from the University of Bremen in Germany. After having worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Los Alamos National Lab and at Georgetown University, he joined Enthought, where he mainly focused on building the Enthought Python distribution. He is also the author of the Bitarray Python library.

Jay BourqueMr. Bourque holds a B.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of Houston and has 10 years of professional development experience with C, C++ and Python. Jay has extensive experience in the defense field, including serving as a lead developer for a Royal Danish Navy project and working on tactical data link systems for the U.S. military.

Oscar VillellasOscar holds a B.S. in Computer Engineering from the University Jaume I, Castillo, Spain. Oscar has over 10 years of professional development experience with C++, primarily with writing performance critical code in console game engines for the video game industry.


Siu Kwan LamSiu Kwan Lam has a B.S.+M.S. degree in Computer Engineering from San Jose State University. He taught CUDA at San Jose State University during his senior year and has researched TCP covert channel detection for NSF, STC, and TRUST.


Stephen DiehlStephen earned a B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from Boston University. He is the author of several open source data and networking libraries. His recent work has been related to building next-generation NumPy infrastructure to support out-of-core and distributed workflows. Stephen is knowledgeable in distributed systems, concurrency, and scientific programming.


Mark FlorissonMark Florisson has a B.S. in Computer Science from the University of Twente and is working towards a M.S. degree in High Performance Computing at the University of Edinburgh. Mark is an experienced Python programmer and a regular contributor to various open source projects.

Sean Ross-RossMr. Sean Ross-Ross holds a B.S. degree in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia and has 9 years of professional development and consulting experience. Sean has experience in a wide variety of applied computer science industries including Seismic Exploration, Satellite imaging and Protein Engineering.


James K. Lowden is a software developer and entrepreneur with a long history of experience with C++ and SQL. He joined Continuum as a Senior Software Architect in April 2013. Previously, he worked in Quantitative Research at AllianceBernstein.

In his spare time, James is a sailor and serves as the maintainer for the FreeTDS project. He has two grown daughters and resides in Manhattan.


Ian Stokes-ReesIan is a computational scientist who has had the opportunity to work on some of the biggest "Big Data" problems there are over the past decade. He loves Python and promotes it at every opportunity. Ian's greatest interest is in enabling communication, collaboration, and discovery through numbers, narratives, and interactive visualizations made possible by high performance computing infrastructure.

Ian's love of computers started with an Apple and Logo at the age of 8. After receiving two engineering degrees at the University of Waterloo (Canada), Ian spent several years in industry developing algorithms and infrastructure for computational problems. He has spent the last decade pursuing a Ph.D. at Oxford (UK), working on the computing team for one the CERN particle physics experiments, and working on computational techniques for protein structure determination at Harvard (US).


Davin Potts Davin Potts is responsible for leading customer engagements and developing the mentorship program at Continuum.

Davin was most recently Chief Science Officer at Stipple, Inc., a San Francisco-based startup where he drove the science behind Stipple's computer vision and market creation technologies. Prior to joining Stipple, Davin co-founded KNIME.com, GmbH, a 5-year old commercial startup in Zurich, Switzerland, focused on offerings around the open source KNIME data mining and visualization platform.

Davin holds two BS degrees from Texas A&M, an MS from U. Chicago, and diverted portions of his summers to applied math research projects at Argonne Nat'l Labs' Mathematics and Computer Science Division while otherwise engaged in PhD studies at U. Chicago's Chemistry department.


Ben ZaitlenlMr. Zaitlen received undergraduate degrees in Mathematics and Physics from UC Santa Cruz, and a Master's degree in physics from Indiana University. He worked at the Biocomplexity Institute developing and supporting a Multi-Scale Modeling environment for Developmental Biology. Mr. Zaitlen is also passionate about electronics and has developed a number of embedded and wearable hardware projects.


Crystal SojaCrystal Soja has a B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Cornell University. Prior to joining Continuum Analytics, Crystal spent over 10 years working in the Systems and Technology Group at IBM. She has extensive experience using SAS to analyze semiconductor data for many Power PC processors, ranging from those used in home game consoles to those that power some of the fastest supercomputers in the world. Crystal also developed technical documentation, supported customers, and managed many small projects during her tenure at IBM.


Bradley KreiderMr. Kreider holds a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Lehigh University. Before joining Continuum, Brad worked at Perimeter E-Security as a Senior Research Scientist, building business analytics systems for aggregating and analyzing large amounts of data. Prior to Perimeter, Bradley worked at McAfee on the SiteAdvisor product, optimizing a system of distributed Python downloaders and web crawlers.

Troy PowellTroy Powell has a B.S. Degree in Business Information Technologies from the University of Phoenix. Before joining Continuum, Troy worked for Enthought Inc in Testing, Development, Videography, Graphics Design, Web Development, and Network and IT Administration Services. Prior to Enthought, he worked for 12 years in the Semiconductor Industry as a Customer Support Engineer for KLA-Tencor.


Sales, Marketing, and Administrative Staff

Matt HarwardMatt Harward, Director of Sales and Marketing, received a B.A. from Brigham Young University in Spanish and Business in '94. He has 18 years experience in high tech sales management and marketing. He co-founded and sold two high-tech companies, Professional Presentations Group and Makau Corporation, which focused on software training and product marketing services for leading hardware and software vendors. Before joining Continuum, Matt served as Sales and Marketing Director for Enthought Inc, a scientific computing services firm.


Corinna BahrMs. Bahr received a B.B.A. in International Business and a B.A. in Government from the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to Continuum, Corinna worked in marketing for companies specializing in data center, VPN, and online storage services.


Douglas PennockMr. Pennock received a B.S. in Business Administration from Weber State University and a Masters Degree from the Marriott School of Business at Brigham Young University. Doug has over ten years of experience as CFO and senior management of several companies, both public and private. He has had extensive experience with start-up to mid-sized companies in Virginia, South Carolina, New York, and Central America, managing operating budgets from $500,000 to $15 million. As a founding member of an international consulting group, Doug also has significant experience in analyzing financial and operational systems, developing sales and marketing strategies, and driving overall business expansion activities. With significant experience in both the technology and for-profit education industries, he brings years of practical business experience to the Continuum team. Doug is currently a member of the Board of Directors of corporations located both in and outside of the United States.


Jason SojaJason has an M.B.A. in Finance from the University of Delaware and a B.S. in Finance from Arizona State University. Prior to joining Continuum in 2012, Jason worked at ProFund Advisors, where he was responsible for the daily trading and reporting activities in leveraged Long/Short ProShares Exchange Traded Funds. Jason was also previously employed at E*TRADE Financial, where he was responsible for treasury operations and managing E*TRADE's cash portfolio, and at PFPC INC., a PNC Financial Services company, responsible for mutual fund accounting. Jason is responsible for all accounting, logistics, and operations at Continuum Analytics.


Liz MaxfieldLiz was one of the first employees at Continuum. She is the office Receptionist and runs the day-to-day operations.
